Advanced Digital Retinal Imaging and Telemedicine

As people age, their vision begins to worsen. A condition called Age-Related Macular Degeneration, or ARMD, in which the macula portion of the retina deteriorates. This is the leading cause of blindness in those 60 and over. ARMD affects ones central vision, causing things to look slightly distorted, blurry or washed out. Although there is no proven cure, early detection of retinal changes may minimize the severity.

As a means to this end Roberts Eyecare Associates now offers digital retinal imaging. The procedure is painless and designed keeping patient comfort a priority. The equipment produces a high quality color digital image of the retina, instantly displaying it on a high-resolution monitor that can be used to detect the earliest stages of retinal change. It ensures that clinical information is comprehensive and facilitates in the proper diagnosis of a wide range of eye disease. Glaucoma, retinal detachment, and diabetic retinopathy are some of the common eye diseases that the imaging system is helpful in identifying and tracking over time. An additional benefit this system brings is its ability to e-mail images to other doctors for review, when appropriate.
